Seventh Grade

The 7th grade program at WISH incorporates the constructivist learning theory into everyday instruction, engaging students in hands on, project-based learning. While core curriculum will be aligned to the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) where applicable, it was also be differentiated to best meet each child's learning needs. 7th grade scholars will participate in cooperative and collaborative learning activities designed to develop their social and academic skills in line with our mission of balanced learning. Finally, in keeping with our inter-disciplinary approach to learning, technology, art, music, and PE will be integral components of the seventh grade curriculum.

Mathematics Curriculum

The WISH mathematics curriculum is aligned to the California Common Core State Standards, which call for: learning mathematical content in the context of real-world situations, using mathematics to solve problems, and developing "habits of mind" that foster mastery of mathematics content through mathematical understanding. In grade 7, instruction focuses on four critical areas:

• Developing an understanding, and then application of proportional relationships

• Developing an understanding of operations with rational numbers; working with
  expressions and linear equations

• Solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions; working   with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area,
  and volume

• Drawing inferences about populations based on samples

Language Arts Curriculum

WISH's language arts curriculum is aligned with the California Common Core State Standards, which are designed to help build:

• Creativity and innovation

• Critical thinking and problem solving

• Collaboration and communication

The standards are divided into strands: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language. Connected to these design considerations is the interdisciplinary expectation that the development of each student's literacy skills is a shared responsibility-English language arts teachers collaborating with teachers of other academic content subjects for an integrated model of literacy across the curriculum. Students learn to critically read and analyze the written word, both works of literature and pieces of nonfiction. Using research skills, backed by the latest technology, they gain tools which enable them to sift through the staggering amounts of information available. As a result, our students are capable of engaging in collaborative conversations, sharing and reforming viewpoints through a variety of written and spoken applications.

Science Curriculum

The seventh grade science curriculum includes the essential skills and knowledge students will need to be scientifically literate citizens in the twenty-first century. The study of Life Sciences is emphasized, including:

• Cell Biology

• Genetics

• Evolution

• Earth and Life History (Earth Sciences)

• Structure and Function in Living Systems

• Physical Principles in Living Systems (Physical Sciences)

Technology Curriculum

Technological literacy is critical for twenty-first century success, and that's why technology education is integrated into the curriculum. Through a partnership with PlanetBravo, the technology instruction for seventh grade will focus on the theme of Technology as a Tool   for Computation, and will feature lessons including:

• A Year of Computer Science

• Excel Spreadsheets Functions

• Scratch Programming

• Python Programming

• 3D Modeling
